Claytor Lake State Park is accepting applications for Overnight Contact Ranger positions.
Job Summary:
Contact Rangers are essential to meet the demands brought on by park visitation and the completion of many customer service duties. The position is the first point of contact to meet and greet park visitors, collect user fees, perform campground and cabin registration, general administrative tasks, and more.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
- Position primarily provides overnight coverage at the park entrance Contact Station and is the only staff member on duty during that time.
- Provide high-quality customer service and accurate, detailed information on state parks, fees, rules and regulations, directions, pricing, annual passes, trail information, park interpretive programs, and local area attractions to park visitors.
- Collect appropriate fees, sell merchandise, and register overnight and day-use rentals using a computer point of sale system.
- Responsible for reconciling revenue for registers.
- Perform administrative duties such as answering calls, composing arrival information for guests, copying, filing, and inventory, and other duties as assigned.
- Position maintains the cleanliness of the work area.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Perform high-quality customer service with park visitors and co-workers professionally and civilly.
- Operate a computer point of sale system, make change for transactions, and reconcile revenue for registers.
- Must be willing to work independently through overnight shifts to include weekdays, weekends, and holidays.
Additional Considerations:
- General knowledge of park operations and local attractions preferred.
- General knowledge of office and computer operations preferred.
Special Instructions:
- Background Check: Employment in all Virginia State Parks positions is contingent upon satisfactory completion of a criminal history background check.
- Employment Eligibility: Selected candidates must complete the I-9 Employment Eligibility Verification Form. DCR participates in E-Verify.
- Driver’s License Requirement: A valid State Driver's License is required if operating a state or personal vehicle for agency business.
- Work Requirements: Wage/seasonal positions are not eligible for benefits and are limited to 1,500 hours from May 1 to April 30.

- DCR classified, retired, and wage staff (after six months of service) are entitled to overnight facility discounts, such as:
- Free camping outside of the Memorial Day weekend to Labor Day period in sites designed for up to six people.
- Free camping Sunday night through Thursday night (excluding the night before a holiday) from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day.
- Fifty percent discount on cabins (up to 3 bedrooms) outside of Memorial Day weekend to Labor Day, for a maximum of 14 nights. All reservations require a two-night minimum. Bunkhouses, camping cabins, and yurts are included; one-night yurt stays only receive a 25% discount.
