The Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR) is hiring! Join us in preserving what people care about most – access to the outdoors, natural habitats, open spaces, clean water, and safe infrastructure.

Sky Meadows State Park is accepting applications for Maintenance Ranger positions.

Job Summary:

The Maintenance Ranger position is responsible for performing routine grounds maintenance, light construction, and cleaning tasks essential to the operation and upkeep of the Virginia State Park facilities, grounds, and equipment. Maintenance Rangers are expected to work closing shifts on Mondays-Thursdays and Opening shifts on Weekends.

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

Clean and maintain bathrooms, picnic areas, campsites, and facilities.
Mow grass and perform general grounds keeping landscape maintenance tasks.
Remove leaves, trash, and litter from park areas to ensure a clean and safe environment.
Perform basic maintenance and routine care on vehicles, tools, and equipment.
Work involves standing, bending, and regular exposure to outdoor elements.
Assist with additional maintenance and operational tasks as assigned by supervisors.
Availability to work weekends, holidays, and evening shifts is required.
Valid Driver's License required.
Willingness to work outdoors in a variety of weather conditions.
Regular work hours include working closing shifts during the weekdays and opening shifts on the weekends. Closing shifts vary by season due to dusk time changes. Opening shifts are from 7 am-3 pm.

Minimum Qualifications:

Experience performing preventative maintenance for groundskeeping, facilities, vehicles, and equipment.
Experience with trades skills such as construction, carpentry, plumbing, electrical, etc.

Additional Considerations:

Experience with acting as a supervisor or in a lead worker role, as well as working as part of a crew in a team environment.

Driver’s License Requirement: A valid State Driver's License is required if operating a state or personal vehicle for agency business.
Work Requirements: Wage/seasonal positions are not eligible for benefits and are limited to 1,500 hours from May 1 to April 30.

DCR classified, retired, and wage staff (after six months of service) are entitled to overnight facility discounts, such as:
- Free camping outside of the Memorial Day weekend to Labor Day period in sites designed for up to six people.
- Free camping Sunday night through Thursday night (excluding the night before a holiday) from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day.
- Fifty percent discount on cabins (up to 3 bedrooms) outside of Memorial Day weekend to Labor Day, for a maximum of 14 nights. All reservations require a two-night minimum. Bunkhouses, camping cabins, and yurts are included; one-night yurt stays only receive a 25% discount.
