Job openings at DCR

DCR is looking for talented people to fill positions listed below. Unless stated otherwise, you must complete and submit an electronic state application by the job announcement's close date.

Generally applications must be made through the RMS (electronic state application). We will, however, accept paper applications for some state park slots. Be sure to refer to the individual recruitment for specific requirements.

The Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR) is hiring! Join us in preserving what people care about most – access to the outdoors, natural habitats, open spaces, clean water, and safe infrastructure.

​Sky Meadows State Park is accepting applications for a Contact Ranger position.

Job Summary:

Provide the first point of contact as you connect the park’s visitors to the natural and historic treasures of Sky Meadows State Park. Contact rangers will operate the park’s Visitor Center and Contact Station, including collecting entrance fees, registering campers, providing information on and orientation to the park, its facilities, and programming.

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Provides information regarding state park services and other local attractions.
  • Provides coverage at the park Contact Station and Visitor Center
  • Collects appropriate fees and orients visitors to park points of interest.
  • Provides accurate and detailed information about park fees, directions, annual passes, trail information, park educational programs, and local area information.
  • Operates cash register and conducts retail sales.
  • Assists guests with camping reservations.
  • Keep all areas of the office/contact station cleaned, organized, and stocked with supplies and brochures.
  • Work flexible shifts including weekends and holidays.

​​Minimum Qualifications:

  • Ability to meet/work well with the public. 
  • Must be able to perform simple math and handle money.
  • Must be willing to work weekends and holidays.

Additional Considerations:

  • Previous experience in customer service
  • General knowledge of park operations and local attractions.
  • General knowledge of office and computer operations.
  • Willing to assist in interpretive and outreach programs.

Special Instructions:

  • Background Check: Employment in all Virginia State Parks positions is contingent upon satisfactory completion of a criminal history background check.
  • Employment Eligibility: Selected candidates must complete the I-9 Employment Eligibility Verification Form. DCR participates in E-Verify.
  • Driver’s License Requirement: A valid State Driver's License is required if operating a state or personal vehicle for agency business.
  • Work Requirements: Wage/seasonal positions are not eligible for benefits and are limited to 1,500 hours from May 1 to April 30.
