Highland Natural History
Explore some of Virginia's premier high-elevation natural communities while searching for interesting plants, animals, and fungi. Participants can expect to see a number of rare or unusual plants and animals that are generally only seen much farther north. Contact maryjane.epps@dcr.virginia.gov if you have questions. Meet at the Locust Springs picnic area.

Location: Locust Springs/Laurel Fork area, Highland Co., Locust Springs Picnic Area, 38°35'08.1"N 79°38'32.6"W
Maximum capacity: 15
Age: All ages welcome with adequate supervision
Pets: No
Clothing: Please dress appropriately for the weather and wear sturdy and comfortable shoes. Be prepared for wet feet as we may explore some soggy wetlands and may encounter a stream crossing.
Amenities: pit toilet.
Supplies: Bring water, snacks, sunscreen and bug spray.
Participants should be able to:
- Understand and follow directions to avoid/manage risks.
- Tolerate the elements including temperature for the duration.
- Traverse unpaved and uneven trails. Wet feet are possible due to wetland exploration or potential stream crossings.
