Seven projects selected for Recreational Trails Program grants

RICHMOND, Va. — The Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation and the Federal Highway Administration have awarded grants to seven trail projects through the Recreational Trails Program. 

The Recreational Trails Program, or RTP, is a federal, matching reimbursement program established to construct and rehabilitate recreational trails and trail-related facilities.

During an open application process that ended in May, the agencies received 24 applications requesting $4.93 million in grant funds. A total of $1.3 million was awarded to the selected projects, representing non-motorized, motorized and diverse trail uses across the Commonwealth.

Selected projects:

  • Albemarle County

Old Mills Trail Extension Phase I: Lego Farm - Albemarle County | $210,698.22

  • Isle of Wight County

Clontz Park Boat Ramp Safety and Access Improvements - Town of Smithfield | $252,800

  • Northampton County

Kiptopeke State Park Boardwalk Repairs - Virginia State Parks | $50,000

  • Petersburg 

Wilcox Lake Historical Trails Restoration - City of Petersburg | $76,917 

  • Richmond City

Crooked Branch Ravine Bridge Phase 2 - City of Richmond Department of Parks, Recreation, and Community Facilities | $210,698.22

  • Rockbridge County

Goshen Community Park Trail Phase I - Town of Goshen | $210,698.23

  • Woodstock, Shenandoah County

North Fork Trails Connectivity - Shenandoah Valley Bicycle Coalition | $296,411.60

Counties, cities and towns, park and recreation authorities, tribal governments, state agencies, federal agencies and nonprofit organizations were eligible to compete for funding.

The Division of Planning and Recreation Resources at the Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation provides comprehensive outdoor recreation planning and builds facilities within state parks. The division manages grant programs and provides technical expertise related to open space use and access, such as statewide trails, scenic rivers and its statewide comprehensive outdoor recreation plan.
