Caledon State Park

Caledon is definitely a birding hot spot. The park is particularly known for bald eagles.

Type of birds

Caledon's greatest attraction is bald eagles, but you can also find many common and not-so-common birds here. There are resident herons, raptors, waterfowl, and songbirds, countless seasonal visitors, as well as the occasional Virginia rail, American woodcock, spotted sandpiper, or pied-billed grebe... though you might need to visit a few times to glimpse one.  Visit eBird for a list of bird observations.

Best time of year to observe

All seasons are great for birding at Caledon, but winter brings in many birds and birders.

Best places in the park to observe

The Jones Pond shoreline offers excellent bald eagle viewing as well as an active great blue heron nest. The beach at Boyd's Hole, the Potomac Overlook cliff, and the Cliffs Overlook near Caledon Marsh are all great viewing spots as well. Inside the Visitor Center you can practice birding year-round, where the wide window view delights with close-ups, fly-bys, and songbirds of all colors in all weather.

Special birding programs and events

Caledon offers Eagle Tours and Owl Prowls year-round, as well as seasonal birding programs like Love Birds, Wings & Wildflowers, Breakfast with the Greats, Winter Waterfowl Wonders, and Winter's Wild Woodpeckers.
