Douthat's Anniversary: Celebrating 90 Years

Join us as we celebrate 90 years of Douthat State Park and honor the Civilian Conservation Corps—the men whose hard work and dedication built the foundation of the park we enjoy today. Opened in June 1936, Douthat was one of Virginia’s original state parks and stands as a lasting testament to the CCC.

This special anniversary event will transport visitors back to the 1930s to experience a day in the life of the CCC. Guests will learn about the three camps that built the park, explore what camp life was like, and discover how CCC craftsmanship shaped Douthat’s trails, cabins, and lake.

Participants can pick up a "passport", while supplies last, and "enlist" in the CCC. Throughout the day, as they visit booths and take part in activities, guests can collect stamps to complete their passport. Once all sections are stamped, participants can be “discharged” and receive a small prize. Enlistment and discharge will be available at any of the three picnic shelters.

Please note: This event requires walking between three different picnic areas. The route follows natural, uneven surfaces.

Whether you're a history buff, a nature lover, or simply looking for a memorable day outdoors, this event has something for everyone:

-Live CCC-era demonstrations
-Guided history walks past original CCC structures. Walks will take place at 11 a.m., 1 p.m., and 3 p.m. leaving from Camp Malone Shelter
-Informational booths and historic displays
-Local vendors and food trucks
-Hands-on activities for all ages
-Storytelling that brings the 1930s to life

Come celebrate nine decades of conservation, community, and outdoor adventure. Help us honor the legacy of the CCC and commemorate Douthat State Park’s 90th anniversary.

Please bring cash! Vendors and food trucks will be cash only due to limited internet service.

About Virginia State Parks History and Culture Day

On June 15, 1936, Virginia became the first state to open an entire park system of six parks on the same day. To celebrate this significant anniversary, Virginia State Parks hosts History and Culture Day every year on June 15, providing a unique opportunity for visitors to explore the stories that make our parks special while enjoying the scenic beauty of its natural landscapes. From living history demonstrations to ranger-led kayaking tours and guided nature walks, History and Culture Day offers special programs for visitors of all ages.
