Where

Program Location: Launch A Parking Lot
Main Park Address: Powhatan State Park, 4616 Powhatan State Park Rd., Powhatan, VA 23139.

When

Sept. 26, 2026. 9:00 a.m. - 10:30 a.m.

Let's take a hike in the great outdoors to celebrate the 100th Anniversary of Virginia's Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR)!  From the beginning of DCR in 1926, to the first six Virginia state parks to open in 1936, to 44 state parks in 2026, DCR has created a legacy that will last for many years to come.

On this ranger-led hike, we will reflect on how Powhatan State Park embodies DCR's values: diversity of nature, culture and communities to ensure a sustainable and equitable future for recreational access and a healthy environment for all Virginians to enjoy. Here's to another 100 years of keeping Virginia beautiful!

What to Expect:
We will walk the loop of Turkey-River-Gold Dust Trails: 2.5 miles, partially flat with several moderate hills through forest and open meadow. Please wear close-toed shoes, sun protection, bring plenty of water, and snacks if you'd like. Dress for the weather and be prepared to hike in all weather conditions, with the exception of thunderstorms. Friendly dogs are welcome and must be on a 6-foot leash. This route cannot be accessed by the all-terrain wheelchair.

While registration is not required for this program, it is recommended. If you register, we will be able to contact you if the program is cancelled due to weather or other unforeseen circumstances.

About DCR's 100th Anniversary
A century of protecting Virginia’s natural and cultural treasures

On March 17, 1926, the Virginia General Assembly passed landmark legislation establishing the State Commission on Conservation and Development, planting the seeds for what would become today’s Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR).

Now, a century later, we celebrate 100 years of protecting, preserving and enhancing the natural and cultural resources that make Virginia extraordinary. Learn more.
