Join us after dark to observe moths and other insects of the night. Entomologists Dr. Sarah Reilly and Dr. James Reilly will set up special lights that draw in amazing species of moths and other insects. You'll probably see over a hundred different species in one night!
Moths represent one of the most diverse animal groups on Earth. Did you know that there are over two thousand species of moths in Virginia? They are a crucial part of our ecosystem, and they keep our world running! Moths come in many shapes, sizes, and colors, from the tiniest micro-moth with metallic gold stripes to the giant silk moths bigger than your hand. Come learn more about the lives of these fascinating creatures.
What to Expect:
The beginning of the program will be held under the picnic shelter with seating at the picnic tables. The moth exploration will be held mostly in the open grassy area near the shelter. Bring a flashlight or headlamp if you'd like! Dress appropriately if you are sensitive to biting insects. Friendly dogs are welcome (must be on a 6-foot leash) and the program area can be accessed by strollers as well as wheelchairs.
