Gather around the fire as we explore the park’s rich history through pictures, stories, and ranger-led reflections honoring the 80th anniversary of Pocahontas State Park, the 90th anniversary of Virginia State Parks, and the 100th anniversary of the Department of Conservation and Recreation.
Discover how generations of visitors and stewards helped shape the park we cherish today and discover how you can continue the legacy. Bring a chair or cozy blanket, your favorite s’more supplies, and a pocket full of questions; there’s always something new to discover by the glow of the fire. About Virginia State Parks History and Culture Day
On June 15, 1936, Virginia became the first state to open an entire park system of six parks on the same day. To celebrate this significant anniversary, Virginia State Parks hosts History and Culture Day every year on June 15, providing a unique opportunity for visitors to explore the stories that make our parks special while enjoying the scenic beauty of its natural landscapes. From living history demonstrations to ranger-led kayaking tours and guided nature walks, History and Culture Day offers special programs for visitors of all ages.
