Girl Scouts far and wide are invited to a day of outdoor exploration at Sky Meadows State Park! Join us for a series of programs designed to teach essential skills for success in the wilderness.

12 p.m. Ranger Beads: Pacing and Orienteering

We want you to find your way in the wilderness! Learn how to establish a pace count for tracking distance on the trail, craft a set of Ranger Beads, orient using a map and compass, and test newfound skills around the historic area of the park.

2 p.m. Take a Hike! Planning and Guided Walk

Practice the basics of how to pack and plan for a safe and successful hiking experience. After, hit the trails with a Ranger for a guided hike throughout the rolling hills of Sky Meadows. Approximately 2.5 miles in length, mixed trail conditions including gravel and grass, light to moderate difficulty.

4 p.m. - Supporting Sparks: Campfire 101

Give your outdoor skills a boost and learn how to build a campfire during this hands-on workshop. Learn about fire safety, types of fires, and combustion methods, then try your hand at making sparks yourself!

Every September, during Girl Scouts Love State Parks weekend, Virginia State Parks offers a variety of programs to connect Girl Scouts with nature while earning badges. From guided hikes and plant identification to campfire building and backpacking basics, this special weekend helps Girl Scouts learn outdoor skills, build confidence and become advocates for the environment.
