George Armstrong Custer is often remembered for the battle that ended his life, but eleven years earlier he played a very different role in the closing days of the Civil War. This lecture examines Custer as a cavalry commander during the Appomattox Campaign.
Following Custer and his 3rd Cavalry Division from Dinwiddie Court House through Five Forks, Sailor’s Creek, and Appomattox, visitors will explore how Custer combined speed, terrain, dismounted carbine fire, and mounted attacks on the battlefield. Discover how his tactical decisions helped disrupt Confederate General Lee’s retreat and contributed to the final Union operations that culminated in Lee's surrender at Appomattox.
This program will be held at the Visitor Center and is rain or shine. For questions, please contact Shannah.Winchester@dcr.virginia.gov.
