How did people light their fires before electric lighters? Watch as one of our park rangers gives a demo on how to use flint and steel to light a fire! Then, you will learn about what was here before the lake and see what makes Smith Mountain Lake such a unique resource. Of course there will be marshmallows to roast.

Every September, during Girl Scouts Love State Parks weekend, Virginia State Parks offers a variety of programs to connect Girl Scouts with nature while earning badges. From guided hikes and plant identification to campfire building and backpacking basics, this special weekend helps Girl Scouts learn outdoor skills, build confidence and become advocates for the environment.
