During the American Civil War, German-language newspapers played a powerful role in informing immigrant communities and shaping their views on the conflict. Through editorials, war reports, and political commentary, these publications helped German Americans understand the stakes of the war and encouraged support for the Union and the policies of Abraham Lincoln. This program explores how the immigrant press reported on major events, promoted political ideas, and connected German-speaking communities to the unfolding war. Discover how ink and paper helped mobilize thousands of immigrants in defense of the United States.
