Freshwater Snorkeling on the James River

So many adventures happen on the James River, but what’s happening below the water surface? Equipped with a snorkel and/or mask, swimmers can see wildlife, water plants, driftwood, interesting rocks, and more. A ranger will be available to guide participants on how to use a snorkel and where to swim. The river water is teeming with a variety of aquatic life including mollusks, crayfish, numerous fish species, and macro-invertebrates.

What to Expect:
We will be accessing the water off of our boat ramp, and wading/swimming in depths of up to 3ft. The park will provide snorkels/masks, but you may bring your own if you have them. Wear a swimsuit, sun protection, and close-toed shoes for walking on the river bottom. Must be 10 years and older. Participants under 14 years old must be supervised by an adult at all times. Swim and wade at your own risk. There are no lifeguards present. If river conditions aren't safe or appropriate for the program, it will be cancelled.

Registration:
Advance registration includes payment of the $5 per participant fee. To register, visit or call the Park Office at (804) 598-7148 from 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. daily. Registration closes 24 hours before the event. Space is limited to 10 participants. In the event of cancellation due to inclement weather or river conditions, full refunds will be issued.
