Bushcraft Workshop: Primitive Pottery

You don't always need sophisticated tools to make quality art: people have been doing it for thousands of years with something as simple as mud. At this workshop you'll learn all about "primitive" ceramics, from what makes good quality clay, to the history of ceramics in our area, to why Virginia red clay is so red. We’ll discuss how to find, process, and shape wild clay; and in the process, you'll be making your own pottery to take home. Come prepared to get dirty!

As a note: while we will discuss traditional methods of firing earthenware, any actual clay firing will be outside of the scope of this program.

What to Expect:
Seating will be provided at benches in the shady forested area of the interpretive campfire circle near River Bend Campground. There will be minimal walking or standing required. Seating and materials will be provided. This program is ideal for adults and children 6 years or older.

While registration is not required for this program, it is recommended. If you register, we will be able to contact you if the program is cancelled due to weather or other unforeseen circumstances.
