Beneath fallen logs and under a blanket of leaves, an entire world lies undiscovered. From beetles and worms to large mushrooms and unseen mycelium, decomposers hide all around us and are integral in the energy transfer in a forest. Join us as we carefully observe this hidden world along Holly Marsh Trail, gently rolling logs to view the organisms living beneath it.

Participants will meet at the Visitor Center before the hike. Holly Marsh trail is about 2 miles long and is an out and back trail that goes to the Potomac River and is of moderate difficulty.

Be sure to wear weather-appropriate clothing and bring a bottle of water to stay hydrated.

In case in inclement weather, please check this page prior to coming to the park. Cancellations will be posted by close of business the day before the program.
