This Halloween, trade in the candy bag for a basket and head into the woods in search of one of nature’s greatest treats—the acorn.

We’ll be out and about seeking the various acorns our woods have to offer, discovering the different shapes, sizes, colors, and characteristics of these tiny treasures. Along the way, we’ll learn about the incredible world of oak trees, including the life cycle of an oak and the important role acorns play in sustaining an entire ecosystem.

But acorns aren't just food for squirrels. From deer and turkeys to birds, insects, and even the tiny creatures living in the forest floor, countless species depend on acorns for survival. We’ll uncover some of the fascinating ways wildlife uses these nutty treats and explore what happens to an acorn after it falls from the tree.

So, this Halloween, skip the trick-or-treating and come hunt for nature’s treats instead. This program will follow a 0.5 mile moderately rated trail.
