When
Jan. 1, 2027. 3:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m.
Start the New Year right and bring your four-legged loved ones on a volunteer-led hike to certify your canine companion as a Claytor Lake State Park B.A.R.K. Ranger! Girls Who Hike Virginia Ambassador, Carson Farthing, will discuss dog trail etiquette and basic outdoor pet safety at Shelter #1 before departing on a short 0.7 mile loop on Shady Ridge Trail.
The B.A.R.K. Ranger program teaches dog owners about the importance of following the Rules of B.A.R.K. while visiting parks. Dogs completing this program will be sworn in as B.A.R.K. Rangers and receive a certificate along with a sticker or custom dog bandana.
What does B.A.R.K. stand for?
B.A.R.K. is an acronym for:
• Bag your pet’s waste
• Always keep your pet on a leash
• Respect wildlife
• Know where you can go
The trail will be dirt with a few rocky areas and some inclines. Pets must be on a leash no longer than 6 feet and you must clean up after them. We ask that you bring well-behaved dogs that are both human and dog social for the safety of your own dog and others.
First Day Hike bumper stickers will be available for free at the Contact Station as well as at the Gift Shop from 10 a.m. - 6 p.m. while supplies last. This is a free parking day to all guests.
