Start your year with an unforgettable adventure at the park’s First Day Hike! Step onto the Powell River Trail and immerse yourself in fresh mountain air, breathtaking scenery, and the vibrant biodiversity that makes this river valley one of the most remarkable in the nation. Meet our friendly park rangers and dedicated volunteers at the trailhead in Appalachia, Virginia, and get ready to discover the wonders of the Powell River up close.
This moderate 2.4-mile out-and-back hike takes about two hours and offers an inspiring journey through the natural and cultural heritage of the valley. As the second most biodiverse waterway in the United States—surpassed only by the Clinch River—the Powell River showcases an extraordinary variety of wildlife and a rich tapestry of stories from the people who’ve called its banks home.
Dress for the weather, wear comfortable shoes, and come prepared for a refreshing start to the new year. In case of inclement weather, the hike will be canceled. No registration is required—just show up and enjoy! For more information, contact the park at (276) 523-9640.
