As autumn settles in, Powhatan State Park becomes a living canvas. Its 1,565 acres burst into sweeping shades of gold, amber and crimson. The upland hardwood forests glow especially brightly, turning even a simple stroll into a walk through a masterpiece of colors.

Fall brings crisp, refreshing air that makes time outside feel effortless. Whether you’re wandering along multi-use trails, enjoying a picnic or watching your kids explore the playground, the cooler temperatures invite longer, more comfortable days in the park.

The park’s 2.5 miles of James River frontage is stunning this time of year. Paddlers and anglers can enjoy quiet mornings on the water framed by colorful riverbanks. With three cartop boat launches, it’s easy to get on the river and soak in the seasonal scenery. In autumn, when the landscape settles into a quiet, timeless calm, visitors can discover one of Virginia’s legendary waterways in its most peaceful season.

Enjoy more time on the trails

As cooler temperatures become more consistent, the park blooms with colors you can only see at this time of year, making fall an ideal time for hiking, biking and horseback riding.

Cabin Trail

The park has about 12 miles of multi-use trails through various habitats, including field edge, upland pine forest and mature hardwoods. The trails provide excellent opportunities for viewing wildlife, as Powhatan’s diverse habitats such as rich forests, meadows and wetlands are full of activity in autumn. Migrating birds, active deer, and other wildlife are easier to spot against the fall foliage, making this one of the best times to experience the park’s natural diversity.

Powhatan State Park has about 9 miles of multi-use trail for horseback riding. Horse trailer parking is available 0.5 miles past the playground area in the equestrian trailhead parking lot.

Take your dog on a hike with you to enjoy the seasonal colors. Pets are welcome at Virginia State Parks and must be on a leash no longer than 6 ft at all times.

Fun conservation fact: Powhatan State Park features a 400-acre expanse called the E. Floyd Yates Conservation Area that celebrates the legacy of a community conservation hero. Conveniently located at the crossing of Big Woods Trail and Powhatan State Park Road, the E. Floyd Yates trailhead parking area provides easy access to the park’s trail network.

Fall-themed programs

Fall programs offer something fun for everyone. You can learn new skills, experience the park’s flora and fauna, discover the park's history, and even volunteer. This time of year is ideal for volunteering and contributing to park projects that need to be completed before winter.

Some programs this season include Fungus Among Us (Oct. 3, 11 and 13), where you'll learn about the variety of mushrooms found at the park. It’s important to know the difference because some are gourmet, some are deadly, and some even glow in the dark.

A Guided Walk and Acorn Collection for DOF will also take place on the afternoon of Oct. 3. This walk allows you to learn about our native trees and contribute to Virginia's future forests.

On Oct. 4, you can attend two programs. The morning program is called Wisdom from the Wild: Place Tending, and the afternoon program is called Bushcraft Workshop: Primitive Cordage.

The Wisdom from the Wild program includes a variety of mindful observations and reflections aligned with the seasons. Guests will examine the ecology of natural ecosystems, explore their own ecological body, and practice integrating nature’s wisdom into their daily life. This program is for teens and adults. Sarah Croscutt is a writer and owner/facilitator of From the Outside, a series of plant and nature-based activities designed to cultivate connection and well-being.

The Bushcraft Workshop will teach you to harness the power of plant fibers to make basic cordage. This program is best for ages 10 and above.

More October activities include fire starting and campfire stories, a birding walk, nature journaling, archery and programs that highlight spiders, bats and owls that thrive in the fall.

For a full list of programs, visit the park’s event webpage.
