2026 Peak Fall Prediction Map

Welcome to our fall foliage report for 2026.

October 29, 2026

Fall color is putting on a strong show across Virginia’s state parks. In the Western Region, Claytor Lake and New River Trail state parks ares at peak color, with brilliant reds, golds, oranges and deep purples, while Fairy Stone is nearing peak with vibrant amber, gold and crimson tones. Hungry Mother, Natural Tunnel, Smith Mountain Lake and Hayfields also feature excellent displays of reds, oranges and yellows, while Clinch River remains near peak. Grayson Highlands has moved beyond peak, with mostly brown and rust colors remaining, while Southwest Virginia Museum is just beginning to see stronger autumn hues emerge.

In Northern Virginia, foliage continues to intensify, with Seven Bends, Shenandoah River, Sweet Run and Sky Meadows displaying expanding reds, yellows, oranges and golds, while Lake Anna is showing early-to-mid-season color.

Central Region parks are seeing steady progression, with Bear Creek Lake nearing peak and vibrant lakeside reflections, James River showcasing colorful river corridors and Occoneechee displaying increasing color near the water, while Staunton River Battlefield remains mostly green with scattered yellow highlights.

Along the Coastal Region, Westmoreland, York River and Belle Isle are experiencing growing color changes, particularly near waterways and trails, though peak color is still developing in many coastal parks.

This fall season, find new ways to connect with nature and get outdoors for some fresh air. Whatever adventure you decide on, be sure to share your Virginia State Park photos on social media by using the hashtag #VaStateParks and #FallinVirginia to be part of the online conversation.
